Obama’s Had Worst Years

In 2013, the tea party began to decline in both real and perceived power, and Republicans began a slow retreat from the politics of absolutism. In this falls budget fight, Obama did not blink, and Democrats did not break ranks when House Speaker John Boehner bowed to tea-party pressure to shut down the government. The public was furious. Republicans plummeted in the polls and eventually gave in. This set the stage for this months moderate reversal of some of the sequesters spending cuts.

The budget deal alleviates the harshest effects of automatic budget cuts on the Pentagon and domestic agencies. It reduces those cuts, known as the sequester, by about one-third, restoring approximately $63 billion over two years. The comprehensive defense bill gives military personnel a 1 percent pay raise and also covers combat pay, ships, aircraft and bases. WATERFALL HIKE: After signing the bills, Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and their two daughters traveled across Oahu to hike at Manoa Falls, a popular, easy tropical trail that leads to a 150-foot waterfall. Hikers seemed surprised to see the first family arrive. Security kept many hikers from entering the trail as the family started their hike, which lasted about one hour.

Correction: Obama-Hawaii Vacation Story

A government shutdown and second debt crisis seemed improbable. His health care law, the signature achievement of his presidency, seemed poised to make the leap from theory to reality. Obama had campaigned for re-election on the hope that a second term would bring with it a new spirit of compromise after years of partisan rancor on Capitol Hill. “My expectation is that there will be some popping of the blister after this election, because it will have been such a stark choice,” he’d said. Instead, great expectations disappeared in fumbles and failures.

What A Yellen Taper Really Means For Stocks

As demand eases, US gold stocks rise to 7-month high

Learn more… Print With the Senate having changed its rules to allow confirmation of Presidential appointees to require a simple majority of 51 votes the Yellen era is now fait accompli. Janet Yellen will succeed Ben Bernanke as Chairperson of the Federal Reserve with or without Republican support. In the attached clip, David Kotok of Cumberland Advisors says Yellens basic ideology is as clear as her confirmation itself. Clearly Yellen is saying Im not going to shock the world. Im not going to come in here with a club and turn things upside down. As far as stocks are concerned thats both good and bad. On the one hand it means a gradual, at best, move towards the reduction of QE3, a program under which stocks have thrived at the expense of other asset classes. More distressingly for stocks, sticking to the plan also implies there will in fact be a move towards reducing the “pedal to the metal” stimulus at some point. No one knows what that means and stocks typically dont deal well with uncertainty. Kotoks best guess is that stocks and the economy will take the a slow withdrawal by the Fed in stride. If nothing else a reduction of stimulus will restore economic balance to an economy heavily skewed in favor of the rich and corporations.

Besides data, interest rates will be a focus and traders will keep their eye on the 10-year Treasury. The yield was at 2.75 percent Friday but had risen above 2.83 percent earlier in the week after the Fed’s October meeting minutes signaled a tapering back of its $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program could be decided within a few months. There also continues to be the overhang from another round in the congressional budget and debt ceiling debates, starting again in January. “I think velocity is going to turn up. When that becomes obvious next year, it will force the Fed to taper,” said James Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Wells Capital Management.

ETF Spotlight: RevenueShares’ Financials Sector

Of course dividend investing features its own menu of potential pitfalls. Since high-yielding stocks are often seen as proxies for bonds, they can fall out of favor in rising-rate environments, such as the one that looms ahead of us after years of rock-bottom interest rates. With higher bond returns, investors could rotate back into fixed income products, eschewing the relative risks of equities. Skittish investors who have been buying these stocks since emerging from the financial meltdown of 2008-2009 have driven up valuations for sturdy dividend payers.

And I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me. Still, the administration has insisted that nothing in the health care law explicitly forces insurance companies to cancel plans or shift customers to a new plan. But the laws stringent grandfather clause, intended to preserve existing insurance plans, only applied to plans that were in place before the law was passed and received only minimal changes since then. Any substantial alteration to a grandfathered plan would subject that plan would to the minimum coverage requirements stipulated by Obamacare. If a more? info… plan did not meet those requirements, it would be canceled. Those complicated policy mechanics, PolitiFact argued, were not adequately captured by the presidents glib declaration, which he repeated throughout the 2012 presidential election.

Fallon named Obama legislative affairs director

Former President Viktor Yushchenko, for example, was poisoned, and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko , the opposition leader, has been jailed on what many believe are trumped-up corruption charges. Today’s conflict erupted after incumbent President Viktor Yanukovich declined to enter a long-expected economic deal with the European Union , either beguiled or coerced by Putin’s threats of economic reprisal by Russia. Given the EU’s ongoing difficulties, Kiev might well want to avoid trading one set of problems for another, but the real issue is not whether the EU or Russia should be its preferred economic partner. The real issue for Ukraine (and the United States) is security. What the Baltic republics and the former Warsaw Pact members really wanted, after shedding the Soviet Union’s chains, was to join NATO, to prevent being reshackled. The EU certainly seems desirable one more Western club to join but it is decidedly secondary compared with avoiding being chained again by Moscow.

Ukraine’s drama, Obama’s weakness

Deputy communications director Katie Fallon, formerly a senior Senate aide, will take over as legislative affairs director in January. She will replace Miguel Rodriguez, a former aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who says he is leaving to work in the private sector. The change is a recognition that the White House needs to improve relations with lawmakers, after bruising battles over health care and the budget. Congressional Democrats are concerned that the troubled rollout of Obama’s health care law could impact their chances in the 2014 midterms. Obama needs the lawmakers’ help to get any of his agenda passed, after few accomplishments the first year of his second term. With polls showing a majority of Americans disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job, outsiders have been calling on the president to make changes to a team made up largely of long-time confidants.

Obama’s Decision Point

It is, as Wyden told Lizza, “a very, very significant moment in the debate,” the point at which the president might have used skeptical court rulings as a natural excuse to end the collection of every American’s phone records. Obama doesn’t. In February of 2009, days after Obama was sworn in, Olsen and Benjamin Powell, a Bush holdover and the general counsel for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, went to the White House to brief the new President and Eric Holder, the new Attorney General, on the N.S.A.’s programs. There was no way to know how Obama would react. During the campaign, Holder, who was serving as a top legal adviser to Obama, had said that Bush’s original surveillance program operated in “direct defiance of federal law.” Obama had sponsored the legislation curbing the authority of the business-records provision, which was now crucial to the N.S.A.

Between July and November, the average monthly trading volume was 1.41 trillion yuan, down sharply from 5.25 trillion yuan in the first half of the year and an average of 6.15 trillion yuan in 2012. The steep decline since July shows how the unprecedented cash crunch in China’s financial system in June has fundamentally changed the landscape of the country’s money and bond markets, as rising interest rates threaten companies’ fundraising needs and reshaped investment decisions. “Basically there have been structural changes in China’s bond market, with the People’s Bank of China reducing its frequency of liquidity injection so as to deleverage the economy and slow the growth of credit,” said Suan Teck Kin, economist at United Overseas Bank Ltd. The Chinese central bank has maintained a largely hands-off approach in the money market since the June credit crunch, allowing borrowing costs to soar from time to time as lenders scramble to find cash to meet demands ranging from tax collection to preholiday gift purchases. As a result, the yield on China’s benchmark 10-year government bond hit 4.72% Nov.
